In 709 AD, in the Iron Age, a spacecraft crashes in the Viking kingdom of Herot, Norway, and the pilot Kainan survives. He turns the beacon on; learns the language and culture of the planet using a machine; and finds that the predator, Moorwen, that he was transporting, had escaped. While chasing the alien monster, he finds a village completely destroyed and is arrested by the warrior Wulfric, believing that he killed the locals - Kainan is brought to Herot as a prisoner.
I watched this because of Jim Caveisel, I've been a fan of his since "The Passion of the Christ" which shut his career down for years, but not for good! He actually gets to talk more than usuall in "Person of Interest" which is a really good series, prophetic really. This movie was pretty good, not as great as I'd hoped, but definately worth watching. I reccomend it, there's only 1 curse word in the whole movie! Enjoy…
OK, small disclaimer. I did attend high school with Jim, but any nepotism aside, the marketing directory should be FIRED. CANNED! Strung up…on this film. How do you have a budget of 50 mil, and decent special effects, pretty good acting…a uniquely new twist on the chosen one story, and somehow the movie only makes a few hundred thousand on 81 screens?!? What the heck? Since I had never heard of this, I thought it was a direct to video until I looked it up in the IMDb.<br/><br/>Between movies like this and the 2007 movie Stardust, with what has to be one of the best performances of robert deniro&#39;s career, you have to wonder what these people are thinking to try and make money? It&#39;s not like these monsters looked fake? It&#39;s not like the blood and gore was over the top…and hey, you finally get to see Ron Perlman silenced with a decapitation!
Surprise number one: It's smarter than it looks. Surprise number two: That doesn't entirely ruin it as an action film.
Outlander was first conceived by director Howard McCain as similar, but not based on, the classic Old English epic poem Beowulf but with Viking overtones. Norway, although it actually was shot around Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Laborador in Canada. The language he speaks at the start is Old Norse, the precurser from which modern Scandinavian languages such as Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish originated. The actors were coached in Old Norse/Icelandic by an Icelandic professor. Yes. The Department of English at McMaster University, (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) has placed the text to Beowulf online here. The choice of reading it in old English or translated into modern English is facilitated.
